Thinking about divorce? Here's a few things you may want to know

January continues to see a spike in divorce cases. Here are some interesting facts about relationship breakdowns:

You can agree on arrangements even before contemplating divorce. You do this by making use of a Separation Deed. This outlines what you and your spouse agree will happen in relation to the finances. These Deeds are useful to those who have already agreed or wish to try and agree on the distribution of the finances but do not yet intend to get divorced.

There are lines people do not want to cross. 56% of people going through divorce proceedings would fight for a fair share of any jointly owned property. However, did you know that only 9% fight for a fair share of their spouse’s pension? This is a staggering contrast when you consider the fact that more people are willing to fight for the household pet (13%) than for pensions. It should not be forgotten that pensions can be valuable assets for the future.

You don’t always have to go straight to a solicitor. Disputes between you and your spouse or ex-partner can be resolved through mediation. You can aim to reach an agreement about a variety of issues that you deem important. This can include issues relating to money, property or children. In the event that your case needs to go to Court, the Courts will often require you to have gone through the mediation process first.

Times are changing. Fewer couples are divorcing on the basis of adultery. This was the basis for 25% of divorces 40 years ago but this number has since fallen to 10%. The rapid rise in cohabitation before marriage has also contributed to a decrease in divorce rates.
